Finance Assistant
Salary: Circa £35,000 DOE
Cardiff | Full-time or flexible hours considered
Are you an experienced Finance Assistant who enjoys being hands-on, getting stuck into the detail and being part of a small, friendly team? We’re working with a growing business in Cardiff to recruit a Finance Assistant to join its close-knit accounts team of three. This is a varied, hands-on position offering the opportunity to take ownership of the day-to-day accounts payable function, support wider finance activities and gradually take on additional responsibilities as you settle into the role.
The team is looking for someone who is approachable, proactive and happy to muck in. You’ll need to be comfortable managing your own workload, dealing confidently with supplier and internal queries, and using your initiative rather than waiting to be asked.
Just as importantly, this is a role offering a good work/life balance. You’ll be joining a friendly team where people support one another, the environment is down to earth, and you can finish your working day knowing you can leave work at work.
The role
- Working as part of a small and supportive accounts team, your responsibilities will include:
- Accounts payable: Managing the process from start to finish, including processing supplier invoices, checking accuracy, resolving discrepancies and ensuring invoices are ready for payment.
- Supplier relationships: Dealing with supplier queries, reconciling supplier statements and maintaining accurate, up-to-date accounts.
- Payment preparation: Ensuring invoices are correctly processed, checked and prepared for payment within agreed timescales.
- Cash allocation: Allocating incoming customer receipts accurately and keeping account records up to date.
- Payroll administration: Entering payroll data for a workforce of approximately 68 employees, ensuring shift patterns and associated information are accurate and correctly recorded on the relevant systems.
- Accounts administration: Managing the accounts inbox, responding to queries and providing general administrative support to the wider team.
- Team support: Helping with other finance and administrative duties as required, with the opportunity to develop your responsibilities over time
You’ll ideally have:
- Solid, hands-on experience managing accounts payable from start to finish.
- Experience handling supplier queries, reconciling statements and preparing invoices for payment.
- Strong Excel skills and excellent attention to detail.
- Good numerical and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
- Confidence communicating with suppliers, colleagues and other stakeholders.
- The ability to use your own initiative, solve problems and take ownership of your work.
- A flexible, positive approach and a willingness to support colleagues across the team.
- A genuine interest in being part of a small team where everyone plays their part.
- Previous experience with payroll data entry would be beneficial, although the key requirement is strong accounts payable experience, accuracy and the confidence to learn new systems and processes.
- Personality is important. We’re looking for someone who is approachable, confident, practical and happy to roll up their sleeves. You don’t need to know everything on day one, but you do need to be willing to learn, get involved and take on additional responsibilities as the role evolves.
Hours and flexibility
- This is a fully office-based position in Cardiff, with on-site parking available.
- The standard working hours are Monday to Friday, 8.30am–5.00pm, with a 30-minute lunch break. However, the business recognises that flexibility can make a real difference and is happy to consider alternative hours for the right person, including 9.00am–4.00pm, Monday to Friday.
- The priority is finding the right person for the team, so if you’re looking for a slightly different working pattern, we’d still love to hear from you.
Salary and benefits
- Salary of £35,000 per annum.
- 22 days’ annual leave, plus eight bank holidays.
- An additional day off for your birthday.
- Workplace pension, available after three months.
- On-site parking.
- Kitchen facilities.
- A friendly, supportive working environment with a genuine focus on work/life balance.
